SUMMARY

This book is designed to help students who have a GCSE in mathematics, or equivalent, progress to understand the mathematics required in a biological science degree. The first half of this book is basic numeracy, in which it is essential to be proficient as a scientist. Much of it will hopefully be revision. The second half looks at applying the numeracy skills and some basic mathematics to biological situations. A general ability to manipulate numbers and think mathematically will help to understand many biological issues, and help interpret data produced through experimentation. Being able to apply basic numeracy and mathematics to unfamiliar situations is crucial. There are problems to try in each chapter that test understanding of each subject covered.
